How to set up a cookie bar
What is a Cookie?
Cookies are small blocks of data created by a web server or application while a user is browsing a website and placed on the user's computer or other device by the user's web browser. Cookies are placed on the device used to access a website, and more than one cookie may be placed on a user's device during a session. Cookies enable web applications to store information on the users' device in order to facilitate essential functions (such as logging in and authorisation) or non-essential functions (such as better usability or advertising tracking).
Do I need a Cookie Bar?
European law (GDPR) requires that all websites targeting EU member states gain "informed consent" from users before storing non-essential cookies on their device.
Non-essential cookies are cookies used to analyse your behaviour on a website ('analytical' cookies) or cookies used to display advertisements to you ('advertising' cookies). Examples of this can be cookies from Facebook and Google Analytics.
Essential cookies, or strictly necessary cookies, are cookies that are essential for a website to function correctly. These cookies are necessary to provide an online service on a website or used solely to carry out or facilitate the transmission of communications over a network.
In addition, starting from the 15th of March 2024, Google will stop capturing a lot of data points from advertising platforms, like Google Ads, and Google Analytics 4. To keep using measurement, ad personalization, and remarketing features, you must collect consent for use of personal data from end users, and share consent signals with Google. This can be done by implementing a cookie bar to your shop.
This is not to be considered legal advice.
