Adding a card to an existing order
Overview
Customers who placed an order using invoice or another offline payment method can now add a card to their order at any time β without making a payment. Once a card is added, it can be used for future charges on the order, such as automated pass fees, extra items, or charges on a related change order.
π‘Tip: This is particularly useful for long-running or open-ended rentals where additional charges may come up after the order was originally placed.
Who can add a card?
The customer (shop user) can add a card themselves from My Orders in the webshop. This option appears on any order that was placed with a non-card payment method (for example, invoice) and does not yet have a card on file.

How to add a card to an order
- Log in to the webshop and go to My Orders.
- Open the relevant order.
- In the Payment Methods section, you will see No payment methods listed.
- Click the Add Card button.
- Follow the card registration flow to add your card details.
Once completed, the card is saved on the order and will be available for any future charges.
π Note: Adding a card does not trigger any payment. It only stores the card for use on future charges
Where the card can be used
Once a card has been added, it becomes available for:
- Extra charges added to the order by the admin β for example, additional services or fees.
- Charges on a change order linked to the same reference.
- Automated charges such as road toll or pass fees (AutoPass).
Use cases
- A customer placed an order by invoice but later wants to allow card charges for automated fees.
- A business customer on an open-ended rental wants to have a card on file for any additional charges that arise during the rental period.
- A manager needs to charge a customer for an extra service but the original order has no card β the customer can add one themselves without needing to call support.
How to send a customer notification inviting them to add a card?
You can send a notification to the customer by using the <Notifications> feature containing a direct link to their order, following this format:
Register your payment card here: {{user_login_link}}&redirectTo=/orders/{{order_reference}}

Note: This requires that the direct link login is enabled on your site. Otherwise, please instruct the customer to log in first and then navigate to the specific order.
How to send a custom notification when a card is added?
Sometimes you may want to configure a custom notification to your own team / shop managers when customers add new cards to orders. Or perhaps send an acknowledgement to the users themselves. You can configure it via the Notifications feature <LINK> by using the trigger type βOn Card Added To Orderβ

Frequently asked questions
Will anything be charged when I add my card?
No. Adding a card to an order does not trigger any payment. The card is stored for future use only.
Can I add a card from the Admin panel?
No. The Add Card action is available to the customer from the webshop (My Orders). Admins can initiate charges once a card is on file.
Can I change the card later?
Yes. Once a card is on file, the Update Card option will appear in the Payment Methods section, allowing the customer to update it at any time.
What if I do not see the Add Card button?
The site needs to have an active online payment gateway. The button only appears on orders that used a non-card payment method and have no card currently linked. If you placed your order with a card, this option will not appear as the existing card on file will be used.
